The Biomaterials Laboratory focuses on the in vitro and in vivo preclinical evaluation of biomaterials and medical devices, with specific expertise in Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery. Research activities are conducted according to current European regulations and international standards for biocompatibility and biological safety assessment, including ISO and EN guidelines.

Historical article published in Notiziario Chimico Farmaceutico (November 1996) describing the early activities of the Biomaterials Laboratory of the University of Modena, focused on biomaterials evaluation and preclinical testing for medical devices.

The laboratory conducts research activities focused on biomaterial characterization, osteoregeneration, scaffold evaluation, and biological risk assessment for applications in Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery . Current research lines also include artificial intelligence and deep learning applied to CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) imaging of the craniofacial district, as well as the study of molecular biomarkers involved in medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ).
